We are delighted to publish the first series of practice research in our new Volume 17.1. Kevin D. Ball's There Are Other Worlds: On Black Sonics and Music Video is a videographic remix that reimagines the contemporary music video as a site of speculative Black world-making. Drawing together footage from 13 music videos by contemporary Black audiovisual artists, the video layers these images with sounds and texts from Black avant-garde thinkers and musicians to create a provocative “meta-music video.” Through its remix methodology, the piece moves beyond conventional analysis, using the audiovisual language of the music video itself to conjure alternative Black worlds in sound and image.

A remix of 13 contemporary music videos, There Are Other Worlds transforms familiar images into a speculative audiovisual landscape. Weaving together Black music, poetry and critical thought, this “meta-music video” imagines other possible worlds through the aesthetics of sound and image.
